Helix Charter High School strives to provide the highest quality of athletic training and sports medicine services. Helix is proud to  employ 3 certified athletic trainers and a mental skills coach to provide care for injuries incurred during school athletic participation. The athletic trainers work in coordination with the school nurse and team physicians in order to deliver appropriate, and specific care for each injury or illness.

Helix Charter High School is the recipient of the National Athletic Trainers’ Safe Sports School Award. The Safe Sports School Award recognizes secondary schools around the country that take the crucial steps to keep their athletes free from injuries. Helix is one of only three schools in the county that have been awarded this honor.

In addition to ensuring the physical safety of our student-athletes, Helix Charter High School, in partnership with NAMI San Diego, and Champions for Total Health. to provide all student-athletes access to comprehensive mental health screenings and support.

The athletic trainers work under the Board of Certification Inc. (BOC) Standards of Professional Practice, CIF regulations, California State laws,  current medical evidence, and clinical judgment to ensure the best patient care for our student-athletes.

The athletic trainers will care for the athlete from initial injury to return to play and are responsible for determining when it is safe and in the student-athlete’s best interest to return to participation. As a result, the athletic trainers maintain the authority to hold the athlete from participation and recommend examination by a physician. Additionally, current state and CIF regulations require student-athletes suspected to have a concussion, heat-illness, or cardiac ailments to be seen and cleared of any serious health issues by a physician (MD/DO) before they are allowed to return.

It is the goal of the Sports Medicine team to keep Helix’s student-athletes safe and active. We understand the social, emotional, and physical importance of athletic involvement and are dedicated to providing the safest setting for our student-athletes.
